8 Reasons Why You Should Choose Composite Decking for Your Backyard Deck

Everybody loves a deck. There is something very inviting about a back yard deck that just makes you want to kick back and relax. In Australasia, composite decking materials are starting to make inroads into the market, but the advantages of this type of decking may not be fully realised. Here, the advantages of composite decking board is explained in detail.

1. Low Maintenance.

Little to no maintenance is the biggest advantage of Composite Decking (otherwise known as WPC). Unlike natural timber, composite decking does not rot, fade, discolour, twist, warp, attract termites or mould. Natural timber requires regular oiling or staining (at least once per year) at a significant cost in both time and materials. Composite decking eliminates these costs. Reclaim your weekends!

2. It is good for the environment.decking board

Most WPC boards are made from recycled materials, up to 90% of the total composition. These materials are typically reclaimed hardwoods and recycled plastics, reducing the amount of plastic heading for landfill. Some suppliers also have FSC accreditation, which ensures the responsible use of timber in manufacture. It is worth noting that you should avoid outdoor decking which uses rice pulp instead of reclaimed hardwood, as this material may not be recycled and it prone to moisture absorption, leading to warping and premature decay.

3. It is supplied in standard sizes.

Composite Decking is supplied in standard widths and lengths, helping you ensure you are getting full value for money. It also means you will not have to sort through your timber delivery looking for the appropriate size and grade of board. This can greatly reduce the waste on your project. Longer lengths also means fewer joins, reducing the risk of expansion.

4. Installation can actually be cheaper.

As the Composite Decking boards are standardised and normally much larger then natural timber boards, installation cost may actually be reduced. This is because larger boards means larger areas can be decked more quickly, potentially saving labour costs. Decking supplied with below surface or ‘hidden’ fixings also require fewer screws than natural timber, which needs a minimum of 4 screws for each and every board, regardless of length.

Heavy duty WPC allows for larger spans on the sub-frame, again reducing the material and labour costs.

5. Can be used in marine areas

Thanks to its non-corrosive properties, Composite Decking is ideal for marinas, jetties, pontoons and around spas and swimming pools. It will not rot from exposure to water, nor will it attract mould. Most composites are also non-slip – highly practical in wet areas.

6. Simple to install

Composite Decking is typically installed on a sub frame in the same manner as natural timber and can therefore be used to replace rotted timber without replacing the frame as well. Below surface fixings make laying the deck boards very fast and easy, meaning you can DIY and save on paying a tradesman!

7. Uses hidden fixings for a sleek, safe look.

Below surface, or ‘hidden’ fixings give composite WPC Wall Panel its sleek, clean appearance. These fixings not only look great, but are very easy to install and provide barefoot safety by keeping sharp screws and nails securely in place below the surface.

8. It looks great!

Early composite decking looked and felt more like plastic than wood, but new designs have come full circle – your friends may not be able to tell the difference! WPC is now available in a huge range of colours, profiles and finishes, from ultra modern to ultra realistic, the choice is yours.

Finding the Right Decking Boards Without Breaking the Budget

Cheap decks can be just as effective as expensive timber in a garden or patio setting. Whether your deck is holding plants, or tables and chairs, the main requirements of decking materials are strength, durability, and an affinity for outdoor finish or paint.

Decking materials are available as ribbed or grooved for better water drainage, as well as plain boards, or boards with enhanced grip.

Narrower decking board or grooved boards are a good choice to prevent timber rot from improper drainage, and for this same reason, any board wider than about 150mm is not recommended.

To find good timber WPC decking at cheap prices, ask suppliers to look at overstock inventory, or look for companies that make quality boards out of less material. High quality kiln-dried boards can be much less expensive when they are slimmer, and will still be pressure treated and covered in tanalith-e wood preservative.

Search for alternative resources to your local home improvement stores as well. Buying direct from a lumber distributor may save a significant amount of money, and provide more readily available variety of inventory.

Carefully select your cheap outdoor decking boards to find the least distorted wood available. Select boards with low moisture content, and straight grain. Too much moisture content encourages warping as the wood dries, and buying boards with a slight warp to begin with creates more work to make them true.

Buying properly chamfered boards contributes to water drainage, and treating timber both above and below the deck prevents water from penetrating and causing rot in the supporting framework.

Deck Building Basics

We’ll look at how to get started actually building your deck. By this time, I will assume that you have your building permit in hand, a good set of plans, and a materials list. If you don’t have a material list, simply take your plan to your nearest home center or building supply store and have them create one for you. Most lumber yards can actually arrange for delivery of all your materials at one time including all the nails and screws are you will need. This can be quite handy on large projects or if you don’t own a truck or a trailer. The lumber yard will bring all the parts and pieces you will need to build your new decking board.

The first place to start, is to set some posts for your deck to rest on. Were I live in the Northeast, we have to deal with the frost and free cycle of winter. When I received my building permit, the code officer made sure to point out that all posts must be secured in country at least 36 inches below the surface of the ground. This will ensure that when the ground freezes the posts of the WPC Floor will not heave. Check with your local zoning office to find out what your specifications are for setting posts.

Renting a post hole digger makes setting the posts much easier, especially if you live in an area with a lot of playing or a lot of stone in your soil. I was able to dig a half a dozen holes in less than an hour. Digging the same number of holes my hand would’ve taken me at least half a day so the few dollars I spent on the post hole digger rental was well worth it.

Next, a port some stoning concrete makes into the holes and set the posts. My plan called for 4×4 posts. Your plans may be different. After the posts were in and let the concrete cure according to the directions on the package. I then nailed 2 x 2 joists to the side of the House and around the perimeter of the deck. I used metal choice hangers to hang all the internal joists. You can also tell nailed them but metal choice hangers are stronger and easier to use than trying to toenail large lumber.

There are lots of different types of taking you can use on top of your outdoor decking. I choose simple pressure treated lumber. To attach the deck boards to the joists you can use either nails or screws. If you use nails, make sure you use special spiral nails. These help prevent nails from popping. Deck screws are preferable as they are stronger but they are much more expensive than nails when laying out the decking, it is easier to let the deck boards run long and trim them down later once the entire deck surface is finished. When all the deck boards or laid, simply take a circular saw, and cut all the ends off the deck.

For a finished look, attach a skirt board to the exposed edges of the decking and over the rim joists. The last thing to do, if needed, would be to add railing, and or steps. However, these basics should get you started.

Outdoor Decking Board Prices

When it comes to WPC Outdoor Decking, cheaper is not always better. Finding the best price for the materials that go into building a deck is not always easy. The reason for this lies in the fact that there are so many different materials to choose from. Decking board prices directly reflect the material that they are made from. Some boards are constructed of composite materials, while others contain elements of wood, vinyl, metal and plastic. However, the natural woods may still fare best in the end.

WPC decking board

Companies that WPC Decking made of composite materials often advertise maintenance-free decks for reasonable price. For many consumers who have installed composite decks, they have found them to be anything but maintenance-free. Recent problems with fading, weakening and even breaking have become abundant. Therefore, a reasonable price is not always the best option.

WPC Wall Panel Decking is often difficult to understand. Many of the boards are priced by size, shape and cut. For example, if a decking board is cut with the groove or slot that fits into another board with a tab, they are each differently priced. The same is true for the material itself. Untreated wood is undoubtedly cheaper than wood that has been treated. When considering the price of a decking board itself, the accessories required must be included as well. Accessories such as brackets, screws, nails, brackets etc. the more hardware is needed to construct a deck, the more expensive it will be.

The typical price for a composite board is arrived at by length. The average price of a composite decking board is typically between $1.60 to $4.00 per foot. Hardwood decking boards can be found as high as $5.00 per foot. However, the prices tend to reflect the type of wood or material that is being sold. For those who are not comfortable installing their own decks, contractors will charge a handsome fee for labor.

Maintaining WPC Decking Boards

WPC decking boards, aside from being environmentally friendly, promise you relatively minimal cleaning requirements, compared to all-timber materials. Composites really do not need heavy maintenance procedures; however, they need to be regularly cleaned with usual housekeeping methods for them to last long. Take extra care of them to keep them looking good and to make them more durable. Here are some measures you should take to maximize the use of your composite boards.

In most types of surroundings and situations, regular sweeping or mopping of the boards would be enough. If you wish, though, you can scrub it gently with the use a homemade solution of warm water and soap.

Mold and mildew are among the worst enemies of your WPC decking boards. Your boards should be installed in such a way that they have enough space for ventilation. You should also not allow damp leaves and other moist substances build up on your deck. Be meticulous about the part of your deck that is in a shaded area. Make sure it is not left damp at any time. At the first sight of mold and mildew, treat your boards with a mold removing solution that does not require any scrubbing. You may also use Intergrain Reviva or any similar cleaning product that has a non-bleaching formula.

WPC decking board

During the first couple of months or so, your boards would seem to be exhibiting water stains. If you do not want to wait until it settles down, you can scrub the deck with a non-bleaching cleaner. Being a recycled product, WPC floor decking boards normally change its color by more or less 10%.

If you plan to have barbecue parties on your deck, protect your composite boards by placing a flame-resistant mat on the area where you will be grilling. The feet of the grill, the hot coals and, of course, the grease from the meat and oil can cause scratches, burns and oil stains on your composite boards. If oil stains do happen, clean them up as soon as possible, since the longer the stain sits, the deeper it sets in the composite material. Wipe them off with an absorbent cloth right away and apply a degreaser, following the product instructions. You should follow this up by cleaning with a soap and warm water solution.

You can easily remove scratches with light sanding, but you should remember to follow the grain of the wood. To keep your boards from having scratches, avoid dragging your patio furniture or any item, particularly heavy ones, on your deck. You should also refrain from using pointed objects when cleaning.

If, however, you find that your boards have some stains and scratches that may be hard to remove, do not apply harsh chemicals or scrub heavily. Call the supplier or manufacturer of your WPC decking boards and ask their recommendation for product-specific stain and scratch removal.

ModWood – Understanding and Maintaining Your ModWood

Wood plastic Composite (WPC) products for houses and commercial structures have become in vogue recently. This is caused by efforts to help save the environment. Modwood, a brand of WPC, uses a combination of sustainable wood waste and plastic, particularly recycled plastic milk bottles. While this product requires no staining, oiling or painting, it still displays some characteristics of its components, wood and plastic, and needs proper care.

This brand has types of products to fit your environment. They have products for gardens, poolsides and courtyards of your standard homes. They also have anti-salt air type of materials specially designed for houses by the beach or for marina boardwalks.

But regardless of the type, these products need periodical cleaning for them to last long. You would need to regularly sweep your deck so they will not have build-up of dirt, grime, leaves and other elements that could generate unwanted moulds and stains on it. If you have oil-based stains on your deck such as animal fat from last night’s barbecue or sunscreen lotion spills from yesterday’s pool party, you should apply a diluted degreaser product.WPC decking board

ModWood can also suffer from water stains, just like timber flooring, glass and other surfaces and materials. Experts recommend that a strong wood cleaner like Intergrain Reviva be applied. It cleans well timber and WPCs, both new and used.

When exposed to the sun, water and other natural elements in the environment, this product will show scratches. Scratches may be remedied by applying decking oil. However, if you are just about to purchase WPCs, you might prefer to buy those with brushed finish, instead of the ones with smooth finish. WPCs with brushed finish do not easily show scratches on their surface and, if heavy scratches do show on their surface, they can be wire-brushed.

ModWood products with brushed finish also display less fading, compared to the ones with smooth finish. Brushed finish types also feel more like timber and displays minimal fading over time. They are also preferred for use around pool areas, since they are less slippery.

But you must keep in mind that the brushed finish types easily absorb stains, especially oily ones, and other dirts and moulds. If these are your major concerns, you might want to have the smooth type installed in your place. Smooth WPCs have good resistance to dirt and stains, because it has more plastic elements on its surface.

You need to know how and where you will use the ModWood product before you can choose which type would be ideal. But whichever type you choose, these products are not only splinter-free and less flammable than timber, they are also considerably beneficial to the environment. They are also durable materials, if given proper care.

WPC decking is very beautiful and quality.

Decking and Deck Boards

Wood Plastic  is a popular choice for decking material. It’s also a smart choice given its design capabilities, reasonable cost and charming appearance. But what sets quality wood plastic apart from the crowd and what types of wood are best for decking board?

To protect their outdoor living space from the effects of weathering and pests, many home owners choose treated timber WPC decking. This product takes good quality lumber and pressure treats it with a chemical designed to resist both rot and insects. Many treated timber decking lines are backed by at least a 15 year warranty and with regular maintenance you can expect the product to last much longer than that.

Treated wood plastic is created using both hardwoods (such as redwood) and softwoods (such as pine). For underground applications like deck posts and partially buried framing, it’s better to use hardwood. The natural strength of those wood types will help to lengthen the life of your project.

Treated softwood can be used with confidence on WPC floor deck boards, railings and other surfaces where the water runs away. Pine, spruce and fir are all strong and have a beautiful appearance. With the added protection of the treatment, they can be counted on to last for decades.

You will find knots (circular markings that can pop out) and wanes (long swirls that make a dip or bump) in your wood. Although much care is taken when the dimensional lumber is manufactured, timber still originates from trees and natural characteristics are always found. Many times you can limit the amount of blemishes on your decking by being picky with the actual boards installed. That might mean cutting off sections that include knots or discarding boards with a heavy wane.

Most of the time, these things won’t make the wood any weaker. In some cases though, such as where hardware is attached, you should replace the board with a clean one.

Splinters and slivers are also a natural part of all wood, even the highest quality wood. Think of it this way. Tree bark acts as a protective coating to help keep the wood underneath from drying out in the sun and wind. It’s also a tough skin against fungus and other pests. With timber used for building materials, we have essentially stripped the bark or protective coating off. When the sun beats down and dries out the wood, cracking, splitting, twisting and splinters occur.

Timber can be kiln dried to reduce these things, but over time all lumber will show the effects of weathering to some degree. Being picky with individual boards used and performing regular maintenance will help to cut down the occurrences even more.

Most building supply companies carry high quality treated wood for your decking and other garden projects. You can be confident and look forward to a durable, beautiful outdoor living space finished in quality wood.

The Benefits of Wood-Plastic Composite Decking

Composite decking of plastic and wood fibers, compared to pure wood decking, is becoming the choice for most homes in developed countries these days. While costing more upfront, the former requires lower maintenance costs and is more durable. More importantly, Wood Plastic Composite (WPC) is the wisest option if you want to help in environmental issues such as deforestation and recycling.

WPC wall panel are usually made up of recycled plastic and wood wastes. They have the ability to be molded into spatial requirements specified by users. They also do not need to be painted or stained, unlike hard wood, which has to be sealed and stained regularly. This is one of the reasons why, over time, WPCs need less maintenance. If you are concerned about design and colors, though, these materials come in a variety of shades to match the area of your home or building where you need to use them.

But the most significant advantage of having composite decking of plastic and wood is environmental. WPCs are composed of about 40-50% recycled plastics and 50-60% recycled wood chips or fibers. This helps reduce the amount of wood and plastic wastes in landfills worldwide.

Also, to make a whole deck area solely made of wood, you need to cut down, perhaps, a whole tree. Using WPCs decreases the demand for wood and the need to cut down trees and, thus, helps stop the destruction of natural habitats across the globe.

Less air pollution is promoted by WPCs, too. Unlike treated wood, they do not contain copper, chromium, arsenic and other such toxins. You do not need to stain or seal them even after a long period of use, so you avoid ingesting harmful fumes that linger in your area when treating wood.

WPC

Most manufacturers of WPCs do not only use materials that are recycled, but are also recyclable. Their products can be later reproduced as similar materials for other outdoor areas. Indeed, some even call this “green” decking.

WPCs usually have low moisture absorption and a high resistance to rotting, insect and damage by UV rays. Their low maintenance requirement and expenses truly make them the preferred materials by many people these days compared to traditional wood. Because it is splinter-free and resistant to warping, it makes them even more popular. Undoubtedly, they do help save the environment as they use nearly 100% recycled and recyclable materials. So, the next time you look for decking materials, try to consider WPCs.
